Ronaldo hits back at ‘lies’ over Ballon d’Or rivalry with Messi – SABC News

Cristiano Ronaldo responded on Tuesday to comments made by Ballon d’Or organizer Pascal Ferre, claiming that the editor-in-chief of France Football had “lied” about his rivalry with Lionel Messi.

Ferre told the New York Times on Friday that Manchester United striker Ronaldo’s only ambition is to retire with more awards for the best player in the world than Messi.

Argentina’s Messi, who joined Paris St Germain in a free transfer from Barcelona at the end of the season, beat Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to win a seventh Ballon d’Or, a record.

“Pascal Ferre lied, he used my name to promote himself and to promote the post he works for,” Ronaldo, who has won the award five times, said Monday in an Instagram post.

“It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious award could lie in this way, with complete disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or.”

France Football did not immediately respond to an email request to comment on Ronaldo’s post.
