As if dodging taxis and dealing with sky-high fuel prices wasn’t enough, drivers from Johannesburg now have to watch out for ostrich chasers.
Twitter user, with the handle @GillianYoungBe1 posted a video on Thursday morning of an ostrich running along a busy road in Joburg.
The large bird can be seen walking along the busy road as cars and trucks pass by it.
Randburg SPCA inspector Bradley Hughes said he had not been located by midday on Thursday, but was last seen on the N14 highway in Krugersdorp.
“When we got to the first location we were sent to, we found nothing. We bypassed the N1 highway off-ramp from Malibongwe Drive.”
He said it is likely that the big bird could be further away from those locations now.
Hughes said they did not know where the ostrich came from.
“This search is the first of its kind; it’s quite unusual for us to be wary of escaped ostriches.”
Hughes urged people to contact the SPCA if they see the animal.
“If anyone comes across the ostrich, please contact your nearest SPCA, animal shelter or police station.”
He warned that people should not approach or chase the ostrich as it could harm the bird or themselves.
