DURBAN – As ANC members slowly flock to the International Convention Center in Durban, provincial leaders are meeting with the eThekwini ANC Youth League to reach a compromise on the various lists submitted for the party conference.

Friday, Eyewitness News reported that the regional youth league organizer and coordinator have submitted different lists of their representatives to attend the 8th regional conference.

Only 13 people from the league would be allowed to attend the conference.

ANC regional official in eThekwini, Kwazi Mshengu, said the two young leaders failed to find common ground after being ordered to produce a single list overnight.

“This morning [Saturday] we found out they didn’t and officials have taken over the RTT convening process now to make sure that decision is finalized.

REWRITE ITS HISTORY

Some delegates to the long-awaited regional conference were looking beyond the leadership race, hoping that the new collective that would be elected would focus on rebuilding the organization and providing more opportunities for younger members.

eThekwini is one of the few remaining regions to hold regional conferences after which the province would have its own internal competition.

It is also the largest ANC region in the country.

It has suffered numerous setbacks over the years, with the ANC disbanding its previous executive committee in 2019 and a slow performance in local elections last year.

Many see the conference as an opportunity to rewrite its history within the ANC.

Delegates representing about 70 of the more than 100 in the region were expected to arrive in the coming hours.

This as former Regional President Zandile Gumede and eThekwini Council President Tbani Nyawose clash.

Gumede supporters preached unity and continuity while Nyawose supporters called for renewal, reconstruction and unification of the region.

The conference will end on Sunday.
