Russian forces blow up bridge between Sevierodonetsk, Ukrainian city to another city across the river, cutting off a possible evacuation route for civilians, local officials said Sunday.
Siverodonet has become the epicenter of the struggle for control of the eastern Donbass region of Ukraine.
In some parts of the city, the bloodiest battles have erupted since the Kremlin launched its invasion on February 24th.
Ukrainian and Russian forces fought street-to-street even on Sunday, Luhansk governor Serhiy Gaidai said.
Russian forces have taken over much of the city, but Ukrainian troops continue to control the industrial area and the chemical plant, where hundreds of civilians are fleeing.
Russia’s UN envoy withdrew from Security Council:
However, according to Gaida, the Russians demolished a bridge over the river Siversky-Donetsk, which connects Sievierodonetsk with its twin city, Lisitsansk.
Thus, only one of the three bridges will survive and reduce the number of routes by which civilians can be evacuated or Ukrainian troops retreat on the west bank of the river.
In Lischansk, the Russian shooting killed a woman and destroyed four houses and a shopping mall, Gaidai said.
The head of the Siverodonetsk administration said that slightly more than a third of the city remained under the control of Ukrainian forces and about two-thirds were in Russian hands.
