SA golfer Schwartzel rakes in R5.7m for Masters effort

  • SA golfer Charl Schwartzel earned R5.7 million for a tie for 10th at the Masters.
  • Christiaan Bezuidenhout collected R743,000 for a tied 44th place.
  • American champion Scottie Scheffler took home the equivalent of R39 million.

He may have failed in his quest for a second green jacket, but a South African golfer Charl Schwarzel laughs to the bank after his performances at the Masters this weekend.

Schwarzel, who won the Masters in 2011, was the top-performing SA golfer at that year’s inaugural major at Augusta National.

Schwartzel finished in 10th place with a tie and a tie, but still pocketed a cell phone $390,000 (R5.7 million).

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who won his first major championshipearned $2.7 million (R39 million).

Christiaan Bezuidenhoutthe other South African golfer to make the cut over the weekend ended up tied for 44th place and earned $51,000 (R743,000).

All the pro golfers who didn’t make the cut – including the SA trio Eric van Rooyen, Garrick Higgo and Louis Osthuizen (who retire before the second round) – earned $10,000 (R146,000).

American Tiger Woods, who made headlines after returning from a lengthy injury layoff, finished 47th and earned $43,500 (R633,000).
