JOHANNESBURG – The second elective conference of the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) has started in Boksburg, with delegates already clashing over the constitution of the trade union federation.

Delegates aligned with the Numsa metalworkers’ union have demanded the reinstatement of four officials who were suspended after leading a charge to have the federation’s general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

Vavi has been accused of financial and administrative violations with attempts to have him suspended thwarted by his supporters.

Numsa then demanded that this issue be discussed before the election of a new leadership.

Several speakers, including former trade unionist Mbhazima Shilowa, have yet to deliver their speeches earlier.

It is understood that Vavi and Numsa’s battle is over the status of the federation, with the former wanting her to stay out of politics while the latter are accused of trying to get her to endorse their party of des workers.

The conference will end on Thursday.
