SAHRC urges those harmed by Breckenfell High results to challenge them in court – SABC News

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says those aggrieved by its findings in the Breckenfell High School affair must challenge them in court.

The commission says the school was not involved in a so-called “whites-only matriculation event” two years ago that led to this Clashes between Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members and parents at the time.

SAHRC’s Education Commissioner, Advocate Andre Gaum, says that although the commission found some teachers knew of the incident, it provided evidence before exonerating the school.

Gaum says, “As for the invitations, the evidence we have is that they were not sent exclusively to white learners. An adult who heard about the event through a friend of her child who was studying at the school was among the first to post on Facebook claiming the event was racially discriminatory.”

“So it was nobody who knew about the event firsthand. The learner in question was approached and refused to meet the commission.”

In 2020, eight people were arrested in Brackenfell in Cape Town’s northern suburbs on charges of public violence after chaos erupted when hundreds of EFF supporters protested against alleged racism at Brackenfell High School.

Police used tear gas, stun grenades and a water cannon to control hundreds of EFF supporters. The party had previously obtained a permit from the City of Cape Town for 100 protesters.
