Senator Sania Nishtar, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant to Poverty Reduction and Social Protection, today explained to the Foreign Ministry’s Head of Foreign Affairs Islamabad the “Declaration on the Establishment of a Global Social Protection Knowledge Platform.” The Declaration is run by Pakistan in Newyork, with the support of the World Bank, in collaboration with a “group of friends on social protection” including Costa Rica, Nigeria and Turkey.

Dr. Sania Nishtar introduced the Declaration and informed participants about its conceptualization and the operationalization of the Global Social Protection Knowledge Platform. Dr. Nishtal emphasized that the importance of social protection was clearly expressed during the COVID-19 pandemic. She added that countries with strong social protection systems, including Pakistan, were able to better contain the pandemic collapse than others. We needed to close the knowledge gap in the context of global social protection in order to benefit from each other’s experiences and share best practices.

Earlier, in his introductory remarks, Foreign Minister Sohail Mahmood had today’s greater awareness of the need to increase investment in social protection systems to protect people from the shockwaves of pandemics and future crises. He pointed out that and emphasized the purpose of the briefing. He called on the directors to notify their respective governments to support this global knowledge-sharing initiative.

Participants were also informed that Pakistan’s social protection program, Ehsaas, held an all-day event at the Dubai Expo Pakistan Pavilion on January 16, 2022 to facilitate the Declaration.

The Global Social Protection Knowledge Platform is expected to provide unique opportunities for intergovernmental learning and collaboration to contribute to the development of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
