Secretary-General Appoints Edward Kallon, UN Resident Coordinator of Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Edward Kallon of Sierra Leone as the UN Resident Coordinator of Zimbabwe, with the approval of the host government. He will also serve as a humanitarian coordinator and will take office on January 6th.

Karon has devoted more than 30 years of his career to public services, working both in the United Nations and outside the context of complex emergencies, transitions and developments in conflict and non-conflict situations in low- and middle-income countries. After assuming the post of Resident Coordinator in Jordan at the United Nations, he recently served as Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria. He also held senior positions in the World Food Program (WFP) in Bangladesh, India, Iraq, Somalia and Uganda after starting his UN career as a UN volunteer assigned to WFP in Afghanistan.

Prior to joining the United Nations, Karon worked in his home country as a socioeconomician and community development coordinator for the bilateral technical cooperation project GTZMANR, and as a revenue-generating project coordinator for Global Nonprofit Plan International.

He holds a master’s degree in development research specializing in agriculture and rural development from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from the College of Nyara University of the University of Sierra Leone.

It will be distributed by the APO Group on behalf of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
