Seven-time champion Serena Williams was eliminated in the first round at Wimbledon for the second straight season when she was stunned by French debutante Harmony Tan in a late-night center court epic on Tuesday.

A year after the American retired from her last Wimbledon match injured, her return was eagerly awaited but 115th-ranked Tan tore up the script for a 7-5 1-6 7-6 (7) -Victory .

With the roof of Center Court closed and the 11pm Wimbledon curfew approaching, Tan was snatched away a match point as Williams served 5-6 in a roller coaster deciding set.

A weary Williams then looked close to victory as she went 4-0 up in the tiebreak to 10.

But Tan, who had never played a Wimbledon main draw before, wasn’t done yet, battling her way 9-7 ahead before sealing victory when Williams hit a forehand.

Williams, who has not played a game here since suffering an injury against Aliaksandra Sasnovich last year, ran through emotions in three hours and 11 minutes of drama and put her fans to the test.

But in the end, the rust of so long an absence from the court proved too much as another quest for a 24th Grand Slam title came to a heartbreaking end.

Tan, who has won just two main draw Grand Slam games compared to the 98 games Williams had won at Wimbledon alone, could hardly believe it after claiming victory on her second match point when Williams put a forehand into net shot.

“I’m so emotional right now. Serena is a superstar and I saw her on TV so many times when I was young,” said the 24-year-old on the pitch. “For my first Wimbledon, it’s wow. just wow. “When I saw the draw, I was really scared. Because it’s Serena Williams, she’s a legend. I thought if I could win a game or two that would be really good for me.”
