At the invitation of the Turkish government, Mr Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism attended the 2nd Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF) from 11 to 13 March 2022 in Antalya, Turkey. The forum with the theme “Recoding Diplomacy” was organized and inaugurated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt avuşoğlu in the presence of the President of the Republic of Turkey, HE Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoǧan. The ADF gathered participants from 75 countries, mainly 17 Heads of State and Government, 80 Ministers, 39 representatives of International Organizations.
In his opening speech, the Turkish Minister stressed the importance of diplomacy for peace and development and stressed that the need for recording Diplomacy cannot be delayed any longer.
On the sidelines of the ADF, Minister Radegonde held bilateral talks with various High Government Officials present, including his Turkish counterpart, Minister Mevlüt avuşoğlu and Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister, Mrs Rodriguez Camejo. Minister Radegonde described relations between the Seychelles and Turkey as very good. The two Ministers discussed topics of mutual interest such as signing a cooperation agreement and the future of Turkish airlines in the Seychelles.
Minister Radegonde also thanked the government for Turkey’s assistance in Maritime Security. As a member of NATO and part of the Joint Maritime Forces (CMF), Türkiye, provides ships to patrol the West Indian Ocean and acts as a deterrent to piracy.
The two sides also acknowledged that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine could directly affect the global economy, noting that Russia is the Seychelles’ main tourist market at the moment.
During their bilateral talks, Mrs Rodriguez Camejo, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister, thanked the Seychelles for voting for the latest African Union resolution calling for the lifting of the US blockade. He commented on the general difficulties facing the Seychelles and Cuban Tourism industries during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also commented on Cuba’s efforts in fighting the virus by developing three homemade vaccines and an upcoming treatment in the form of a nasal spray.
On his part, Minister Radegonde reaffirmed the Seychelles Deputy Minister’s commitment to the longstanding friendship shared by the two countries and highlighted that the closure of the Seychelles Embassy in Cuba was purely for financial reasons. He also thanked the Seychelles Government for the assistance it received from Cuba, particularly in the field of Health through the provision of professional health workers from Cuba.
Minister Sylvestre Radegonde was accompanied by Mr Terry Romain, Acting High Commissioner based in London.
