Shortage of baby formula could become easier when Abbott Michigan factory reopens – SABC News

Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N) said on Saturday that it has reopened its baby formula production plant in Sturgis, Michigan, to take a step to reduce an acute national shortage that has sent parents to supplies.

The company said it will begin production of EleCare and other specialty and metabolic formulas, with the initial release of EleCare products to consumers starting on or around June 20th.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on May 19 that the plant was on course to open within a week or two.

The facility will open after meeting the initial requirements agreed with the FDA as part of the agreement that Abbott signed on May 16, the company said.

Stopping the plant and withdrawing formulation for children had deepened a shortage of supply in a nation where, according to federal data from 2020, less than half of babies were only breastfed by their first three months.

Roughly 73% of baby products nationwide are not in stock by May 22, according to data company Datasembly.

The FDA’s inspection of the Sturgis facility revealed “shocking” results such as cracks in vital equipment, a lack of adequate hand washing and evidence of previous bacterial contamination.

Abbott said there was no evidence to link her formulas to the disease, while inspecting the FDA found bacteria in environmental tests and not in the product samples.

The FDA then entered into an agreement with permission to oversee Abbott’s actions to address plant problems.

Prior to the recall, Abbott controlled 40% of the baby formula market, including Similac, but the market share of other companies such as Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC (RKT.L) has grown since then.

Even after the plant reopens, it can take weeks for formula supplies to return to normal, said FDA Commissioner Robert Califf.

Global baby formula companies such as Neocate maker Danone SA (DANO.PA) are bringing products to the United States after the country’s health regulator relaxed its import policy.
