Skipper Dane van Niekerk returns for Proteas in the expanded Commonwealth Games squad

captain Dane van Niekerk has been called up to an extended Proteas women’s squad that will represent team South Africa in T20 cricket at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Van Niekerk was has been out injured since January after a crazy accident.

The talented squad includes 14 members of the squad who competed in the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup, as well as all 18 stars who traveled and played at this year’s Over 50 Global Showpiece in New Zealand.

Players include Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Trisha Chetty, Nadine de Klerk, Lara Goodall, Shabnim Ismail and Ayabonga Khaka. This will be the first time that the format and women’s football will be included in the history of the Games.

A final 15-player roster will be announced on July 12.

South Africa were drawn into Group B and meet New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka.

“This group of Proteas will join a unique class of cricket fraternity who have flown the South African flag at a multi-code event and stand side-by-side with elite athletes from a variety of sports including track and field, swimming and gymnastics, and netball,” said CSA boss Pholetsi Moseki.

Saturday 30 July – 11:00 a.m. local time – New Zealand – South Africa

Tuesday 02 August – 11:00 a.m. local time – England – South Africa

Thursday 04 August – 11:00 local time – South Africa – Sri Lanka
