Smile Foundation brings joy to children with facial abnormalities in North Cape – SABC News

The Smile Foundation continues to bring joy and boost the self-esteem of children with facial abnormalities.
Since the Smile Foundation was founded, over 4,000 children with diseases such as cleft lip and palate have been helped.

This week alone, 17 children in the North Cape are bringing a smile to their faces after successful operations.

In this hospital life is changed for the better. Families from distant rural villages pinned their hopes on these doctors. Children as young as 2 months have been given a new life and relieved parents are beaming with pride.

“When I first saw my child like this, I felt like my child would never fit in with other children. If each of us can donate R100 to support this clinic and these doctors, it will change the life of a child with a cleft lip forever,” says the mother of one of the children cared for, Charlene Van Rooyen.

Another mother, Kealeboga Polelo, says: “I’m really happy because my child couldn’t walk, he’s fine now.”

Plastics and reconstruction experts say they take pride in making a positive difference in children’s lives.

“We do cleft palate, cleft lip, burn reconstruction and hair reconstruction. So it’s a pleasure to work with the Smile Foundation because we have some catching up to do in operational terms,” says Dr. Maria Giaquinto-Cilliers, Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

However, life-changing surgeries are not without challenges. “We’re trying our best, of course the public hospital has some challenges that unfortunately we can’t overcome quickly, so we’re trying to book patients with elective cases that haven’t been done during the COVID-19.”

The foundation is celebrating its 21st anniversary and this year has expanded to include fire victims.
