JOHANNESBURG – Some residents and businesses in and around Johannesburg’s CBD will unfortunately remain in the dark for at least one more day as efforts to restore power continue.

Most of the CBD has been without power since Monday after a fire in an underground tunnel on Ntemi Piliso Street triggered two main power lines.

Joburg City Power said cleaning would continue, after which the laying of new cables would begin.

Eyewitness News spoke with residents and business owners who feared having to spend money they didn’t have on fuel for generators.

“You own a shop, you can earn over R4,000, but now because there is no electricity, it’s half of that,” said one shop owner.

“They need to be fixed. What’s happening right now has been happening since 2020,” another store owner said.

City Power said technicians had been on site since Wednesday to begin repairs to the underground tunnels.

The electric utility said that while power has been restored to most areas affected by the fire, some areas will remain off until other repairs are completed.

“More affected areas within the CBD have been restored thanks to the return of the Van Heerden substation and they include Commissioner Street, Fox Street and even Market Street,” City Power spokesman Isaac Mangena said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
