“ SONA 2021 focuses on COVID-19 pandemic ” – SABC News

This week’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) will focus heavily on the COVID-19 pandemic and the turmoil it has caused in the country from a financial perspective.

This is the point of view of economist Lavan Gopal, who spoke Thursday before President Cyril Ramaphosa’s fifth SONA.

Ramaphosa will address a joint session of the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

The theme of this year’s speech is “Following Our Commitments: Improving Your Future Work”.

This year’s event will take place virtually with only 50 people allowed in the room.

Gopal says the hard-hit economy should be high on the president’s agenda.

“The theme of the President’s speech will certainly be about jobs, lost industries and possible solutions to get us out of COVID-19. You will remember the previous years, [SONA has] always been marred by a distraction from the fighters for economic freedom (EFF), some other parties also leaving Parliament. This year, the theme with COVID-19 means that these disruptions will make it a very short SONA, ”adds Gopal.
