South Africa “technically” enters third wave of COVID-19: NICD – SABC News

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) says South Africa has technically entered the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic because the seven-day moving average of cases exceeds the threshold set by the Department of Health.

The NICD confirmed that 9,149 new cases of coronavirus occurred during the last reporting period. It indicates that the case positivity rate is 15.7%, which is more than three times what is considered acceptable.

Health Director General Sandile Buthelezi said it was the highest number since mid-January. This brings the total number of laboratory confirmed cases to 1,722,086.

Health expert Prof Salim Abdool Karim said the current actual rate of infections is likely double what is reported. He says the latest data actually reflects what happened over a week ago.

Professor Karim says it is up to ordinary people to help slow the spread of the coronavirus by wearing masks, washing their hands and practicing social distancing. People are also advised to avoid crowded places.

The health ministry has expressed serious concern over the sharp increase in the number of infections nationwide, especially as five provinces are already in the third wave of the pandemic.

Buthelezi says from the way things are going, he’s sure the whole country would be in the third wave soon.

Third technical wave

South Africa technically entered the third wave today, according to a statement released by the ministry today, as the 7-day moving average national incidence (5,959 cases) now exceeds the new wave threshold as defined by the Ministerial Advisory Committee. The MAC advisory set the 7-day moving average threshold of the new wave as 30% of the maximum impact of the previous wave.

The majority of new cases recorded Thursday come from Gauteng province (61%), followed by Western Cape province (10%). The Free State and Northwestern provinces accounted for 6%.

There has been an increase of 844 admissions in the past 24 hours and 127 additional hospital deaths reported in the past 24 hours. A summary of reported COVID-19 hospital admissions is presented below.

12,044,072 tests were carried out in both the public and private sectors.
