JOHANNESBURG – South African police are investigating the deaths of at least 20 people at a nightclub in the coastal city of East London early Sunday morning.

It is unclear what led to the deaths of the young people who allegedly attended a party to celebrate the end of the winter school exams.

The local newspaper Daily Dispatch reported that the bodies were strewn across tables and chairs with no visible signs of damage.

“At present, we can not confirm the cause of death,” said Health Ministry spokeswoman Siyanda Manana.

“We will perform autopsies as soon as possible to determine the probable cause of death. The deceased have been taken to state morgues,” Manana added.

Police Minister Bheki Cele was expected to visit the site on Sunday morning.

The owner of the club, Siyakhangela Ndevu, told local television station eNCA that he had been called to the scene early Sunday morning.

“I’m still unsure what really happened, but when I got a call in the morning, I was told that the place was too crowded and that some people were trying to force themselves into the pub,” he said.

“However, we will hear what the police say about the cause of death,” Ndevu added.
