According to the Turkish Embassy in Pretoria, South Africans can once again receive e-visas to enter that country.

This follows Turkey (the country recently changed its name to Türkiye) excluding South Africans from its online e-Visa platform from 6 July 2022.

The Turkish Embassy said in several tweets on Friday evening: “The technical issue has been resolved this evening and the e-visa website is now available again. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Although no reason has been publicly given for the technical problems, travel agency Flight Center said the problem was temporary.

“We have received feedback from the Turkish embassy that the electronic visa application system or ‘e-visa’ online system has been temporarily disabled for applicants,” he said. Flight Centre, Customer Service Team Leader, Lynette Machiri.

Previously, when South Africans tried to apply for the viva online system, they were told:

“Unfortunately, citizens of the country you have selected are not eligible for an e-Visa. Please visit the nearest Turkish mission to apply for a visa. Please visit http://www.visa.gov.tr for a complete list of Turkish embassies and consulates.”

Turkey is a popular tourist destination for South Africans. This can be seen in the fact that the number of South Africans visiting Turkey increased from 24,402 in 2008 to 74,652 in 2018.

However, the Covid-19 crisis showed a big drop, with only 12,251 visitors in 2019 and 6,088 visitors in 2020.
