Springboks aim to hit the ground running in the first Test of the season against Wales – SABC News

The Springboks are confident ahead of the first Test match of the upcoming series against Wales at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

There is a lot said about players being used in different positions and some even playing out of position. But the Boks are enthusiastic to prove that they have planned for all outcomes and that the players are being used to the best of their ability.

The test match at Loftus Versfeld is sold out because the Boks and their supporters are preparing to reunite for the first time since 2019.

The Springbok is proud to have a recreation of players who can play in various positions as and when the need arises.

Damian Willemse, who played in the center with the United Rugby Championship-winning Stormers, will play at fullback for the Springboks and serve as cover for Elton Jantjies on the run.

Willemse likes to impress and settle in green and gold.

“I’m excited to play back at fullback. I think the last time I played fullback was back in the regular season against the Blue Bulls, but it’s been a good week, of course my reps get in at fullback then.” “I know for the Stormers that the role was 12. But I’m excited for the weekend and back in fullback,” said Willemse.

The players’ versatility runs as deep as needed, and especially with just two backs on the bench, a player like Kwagga Smith, and a loose forward forward can even provide cover at the wing.

But that would be in the most extreme circumstances.

“I played sevens for a lot of tournaments. There’s also a lot of space to cover there, but it’s the last step if something happens, but I really love that challenge. I made my Currie Cup debut on the wing. “For me, when that challenge comes, I will step up and I will be really excited when it comes,” Smith said.

The emphasis is on versatility, not on utility, and the Boks think it’s all part of careful planning. Less would threaten the fans and with the prospect of a full stadium on Saturday, the Springboks are excited to give it their all.

“Playing for our fans is very important to us. If we don’t have fans, we can not sit here because they go to the stadiums and they buy the tickets and that’s the way rugby started and that’s why we get paid for it. to do and to entertain the fans for us. Hearing that Loftus is packed to 100% capacity is really nice and we are really excited about it, because last year, with the British and Irish Lions, it was difficult. You’re playing a game , but the atmosphere is not there and I think Loftus will definitely have a great atmosphere this weekend, “Smith explains.

“We are all excited to be back home to play. For me it will be special. This is my first start in South Africa, probably with fans there and of course, as a child I watched the upcoming series and I always wanted to share of being and playing for the Springboks and it will be special and there is a lot of excitement and buzz within the team this week ”, Willemse repeats.

It is the first test of the Boks’ international season and more than anything, cohesion will be the goal.

Everyone on the same page gets into a test match situation and against quality opposition like Wales, and this could be the start of a very productive 2022.
