Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of Sudan and Head of UNITAMS, will work within Sudan, promoted by the United Nations, with the aim of supporting the agreement of Sudanese stakeholders in consultation with Sudan and its international partners. Formally start the political process. Get out of the current political crisis and agree on a sustainable path towards democracy and peace.

UNITAMS was established by Security Council Resolution 2524 (2020) in response to a request from Sudanese leadership in February 2020 to support the democratic transition of Sudan. The transition has faced a major setback that has had a profound impact on the country since the military coup on October 25. Subsequent repeated violence against largely peaceful demonstrators only helped to deepen distrust among all Sudanese political parties. SRSG Volker Perthes is deeply concerned that the current political impasse could further destabilize the country and waste significant political, social and economic interests it has brought since the Revolution. I am. None of the measures taken so far have succeeded in restoring this process of transformation in a way that meets the desires of the Sudanese people.

It’s time to end the violence and enter into a constructive process. This process is comprehensive. All major civilian and military stakeholders, including armed movements, political parties, civil society, women’s groups and resistance committees, are invited to participate in the political process promoted by the United Nations. Women played a central role in the revolution and transition. In the future, their full, meaningful and equal participation will be important. UNITAMS expects the full cooperation and involvement of all Sudanese stakeholders to contribute to its success.

The United Nations continues to support the fulfillment of the Sudanese people’s desire for freedom, peace and justice.
