Special Representative of the Secretary-General Volker Perthes congratulates Sudan on its 66th anniversary of independence. Today, the Sudanese people’s struggle for freedom and democracy continues as the country faces another hurdle following the recent coup on October 25th.
In the context of the current political crisis in Sudan, SRSG Perthes commends all the steps taken so far to find a solution to restore the path of the transition to democratization. The SRSG believes that the lack of trust between all parties must be urgently addressed in order to find a common ground for a mutually agreed path from the current crisis. In this context, the use of violence against peaceful protesters, attacks on journalists, violations of press freedom, and other violations of basic human rights help restore the path of peaceful democracy in Sudan. It does not help to create a typical environment. These breaches need to be stopped and must be trusted and thoroughly investigated in order to bring the perpetrators to justice. The SRSG urges authorities to respect the right to peaceful rallies and allow protesters who are obsessed with nonviolence to freely express themselves. Nonviolence is an important principle behind the victory of the Sudanese Revolution, and almost all Sudanese who bravely appear on the streets to express their demands continue to support it.
The United Nations continues to work to help the people of Sudan to realize their desire for democratic and stable Sudan. The great slogans of the Sudanese Revolution (freedom, peace, justice) once influenced the world, and the current non-violent resistance of the Sudanese people again affects all peace-loving people in the world. We continue to closely monitor and cooperate with the situation to help establish a just and peaceful society suitable for the people of Sudan.
All Sudanese have celebrated their 66th anniversary of independence.
