Special Representative of the Secretary-General Volker Perthes regrets the decision to resign Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdock. SRSG Perthes respects the Prime Minister’s decision and commends the achievements made under the leadership of Dr. Hamdock and the significant achievements he has made in the first phase of the transition period.
SRSG Perthes remains concerned about the ongoing political crisis following the October 25 military coup. This risks further disrupting progress since the December Revolution. The SRSG is deeply concerned about the number of civilians killed in the ongoing protests. He urges security forces to comply with their obligations under international law and to strictly support the rights of protesters to freedom of expression and peaceful rallies. The perpetrators of violence must be tried.
The Sudanese people’s desire for a democratic path and the completion of the peace process should be the basis of all efforts to resolve the current crisis. The lack of trust among Sudanese stakeholders needs to be overcome through meaningful and comprehensive dialogue. UNITAMS is ready to facilitate such a process.
