Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne scored four goals on Wednesday in a 5-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers to put his side ahead of the Premier League with two games to go.
The Belgian put the game to bed with a hat-trick in a devastating 18-minute game in the first half, before reaching the fourth goal after a break when the fans took turns singing “Kevin De Bruyne” and “English champions”.
The victory leaves Pep Guardiola’s top team with 89 points, three points ahead of Liverpool, which they also lead by a goal difference, with the title now firmly in their sights.
The second Premier League title in a row would reduce disappointment with their relegation from the Champions League, after City were relegated to the semi-finals and Liverpool reached the final.
At Molineux, De Bruyne scored the third oldest hat-trick in Premier League history and his first for Manchester City.
For the first goal, he started on the move before running on Bernardo Silva’s pass for a brilliant pass in the seventh minute. De Bruyne had a good try after 16 minutes, coming in on a fine move from the left, but the ball went wide.
“The third goal was my favorite. I think that strike is the purest. I hit the corner very hard. Of the three, it was the cleanest, “he said.
“When you score four goals, it’s always something special. It should have been five to tell the truth! ”He added, lamenting that a late blow had hit the pole.
No stranger to upsetting the big boys in the English Premier League, Wolves had briefly threatened when Leander Dendoncker made it 1-1 after a quick break, before De Bruyne stole the show.
He scored the fourth goal from close range in the 60th minute, before teammate Raheem Sterling completed another easy victory for City with his goal in the 84th minute.
Guardiola was poking fun at his midfielder and praised him for both creating and scoring so many goals for Manchester City in recent years. “Unstoppable, great, great, excellent, perfect,” he said.
Manchester City face West Ham away and then Aston Villa at home in their two remaining Premier League games, with one win and a tie securing the title.
Liverpool play in the FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday before facing Southampton away and Wolves at home in their last two league games.
The defeat put Wolves in eighth place with 50 points.
“When you have players like De Bruyne who can always change the game, you can have a strategy, but when it comes to players like that, they can score four goals and finish the game,” said Wolves coach Carlos Cachada.
“With this performance, we can do nothing about it.
