Sudanese troops said on Sunday that they had repelled an attempt by Ethiopian troops to invade the border between the two countries.
Ethiopian troops were forced to withdraw from the Umbalakit area, according to a military statement, but details have not been disclosed.
General Abdelfatta Albahan, the head of the Sudanese army, told reporters that the incident happened on Saturday. He said it shows how the military was protecting the country following a coup attempt in Khartoum last week.
Colonel Getnet Adane, an Ethiopian military spokesman, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Tensions along the Sudanese-Ethiopian border have increased since the outbreak of conflict in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, which sent tens of thousands of refugees to eastern Sudan last year.
Tensions are concentrated in a fertile farmland area known as Alphashka, where borders are contested.
