Suspected militants shoot at a bus in southwestern Rwanda and kill two – SABC News

Two were killed and at least six were injured when gunmen stormed a rally in southwestern Rwanda, across the border from Burundi, according to Rwandan police.

The attack on Saturday, which killed the bus driver and the passenger, was carried out by the National Liberation Front (FLN), an armed arm of the Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD), the police said in a statement.

“Armed thugs, suspected of being the remains of an FLN operating across the border, shot at a bus carrying civilians,” Rwandan state police said late Saturday.

Police were chasing the attackers in the incident on the Nyambage-Rusizi road in the province’s Nyungwe forest, she added.

The government has said that FLN carried out attacks from the Nyungwe forest area near the border with Burundi in 2018.

In April, the Rwandan government upheld Paul Rusesabagina’s 25-year prison sentence, which was shown in the film “Hotel Rwanda” in which hundreds of people took refuge in the 1994 genocide, for his membership in the MRCD.

He was convicted in September of eight terrorism charges, which he denies.
