“The excruciating screams of family members can be heard from the parking lot.”

It’s such a reporter who covers Shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, described the scene Tuesday night.

In a series of tweetsNiki Griswold, a journalist with the Austin-American Statesman, described the anxiety at the Uvalde Civic Center, which serves as a reunion site for families affected by the shooting.

“A family has broken out in the sob outside the civic center,” she said.

The scene was reminiscent of those that took place after Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, New York Times reporter Maggie Astor noted in a tweet.

“After Sandy Hook, I read about how the group of parents waiting in a firehouse had shrunk until they were finally told that if they were still there, their children were dead. Journalists wrote that the scream could “heard from the street. I will never forget it,” she wrote.

An article from CNN from 2012 described how “French parents” had flocked to the Sandy Hook firehouse. “Why why?” a woman moaned as she walked up the road from school.

The shooting at Robb Elementary School is the deadliest mass shooting in elementary school since Sandy Hook, who left 27 people dead in Newtown, Connecticut. Each of the 20 child victims were 6 and 7 years old.

Late Tuesday night, Griswold tweeted that families in Uvalde were still “waiting for news about their children.” “It’s getting dark,” she said.

“I was talking to a man who says he has been waiting for news about his niece for hours. The heart is so heavy,” she added.

In another update, she wrote: “Many families are still waiting for news in hopes of being told their child is in the hospital, either in Uvalde or San Antonio. The alternative is their worst nightmare.”
