JOHANNESBURG – Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said his department is stepping up efforts this Easter long weekend to ensure the number of road deaths does not rise.

Last year more than 230 people died on the roads during the Easter season.

Mbalula hoped to see fewer deaths this year as hundreds of thousands headed to their holiday destinations.

Mbalula said officers would man roadblocks in several parts of the country.

“Motorists and those behind the wheel at the moment need to come to the party but on our side we will step up our enforcement and awareness efforts as we always do. It’s monotonous to continue to tell people to arrive alive, to arrive alive.”
