The final practice of Russia’s F1 Grand Prix was canceled due to heavy rain in Sochi on Saturday, and subsequent qualifying was uncertain and there was a risk that it would be postponed until Sunday.
Race Steward said in a statement that the decision was made for safety reasons and force majeure.
The session will start at 1200 local time (10:00 SA time) and the qualifying at the Olympic Park will be 1500 local time (13:00 SA time).
Formula 3 races, originally scheduled for Saturday morning, were held on Friday, and Formula 2 races have been postponed.
“From the forecast side, this level of rain will continue from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm local time and will decrease in the afternoon,” said race director Michael Masi.
“F1 is prioritized because today’s point of view is clearly the F1 qualifying this afternoon.”
Mashi said light was the deciding factor in how late the qualifying would be.
“The local sunset is around 1815 … but in these weather conditions, obviously (that) light diminishes much faster,” he added.
“If we can’t qualify today, as we’ve seen several times in the past, we’ll start over and start qualifying on Sunday morning.” (Report by Alan Baldwin, London, edited by Ed Osmond)
