Thirteen-year-old dancer from Johannesburg wins special award – SABC News

A young dancer from Johannesburg, 13-year-old Nico Prinsloo, has beaten contestants from ten other countries to be crowned with the prestigious Geung Soo Kim special award during a competition in Cape Town.

The R10 000t prize recognizes the most promising local dancer.

Another Gautenger, 14-year-old Zeinab Kone, also won the Blacks In Ballet award.

Overall, South Africa won eight medals. Countries including China, South Korea, Mongolia, Latvia and Nigeria participated via video link, with dancers from Russia, Cuba and South Africa taking the stage at Artscape in Cape Town.

The ninth annual South African International Ballet Competition is open to ages six to 19 years.

South African born international ballet star performs in Cape Town

An esteemed young international ballet star from the Western Cape will make his debut on a South African stage next month after returning from abroad for his first performance on home soil in the mother city.

Siphesihle, November 23, born in rural Zolani, was accepted into Canada National Ballet School at the age of 11 and left his home country 12 years ago to seize the opportunity.

He will now be received like a hero when he stars as the male lead in the Cape Town City Ballet’s production of Romeo and Juliet for one night only on August 25thth 2022.

For this historic performance, his Juliet is played by Chanté Daniels.

The first performances of the new production take place this week at the Artscape in Cape Town.

The South African International Ballet Competition is also currently taking place at the Artscape Theater in Cape Town.

The five-day event will feature participants from Cuba, Eswatini, Mongolia, China and Russia.

The jury selected seven individuals from some of the world’s top dance training institutions, academies and professional ballet companies.
