Ticket sales: “Doctor Strange 2” controls again when “Firestarter” lights up – SABC News

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is again the number 1 film in domestic box office.

Over the second weekend of its release, the latest installment in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has raised $ 61 million from 4,534 North American cinemas. Ticket sales fell 67% from the opening weekend, marking a drop compared to recent Marvel films such as “Eternals” (which fell 61% on the second weekend) and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (which dropped about 52% on the second weekend). However, this significant drop is not surprising as “Doctor Strange 2” is coming after the 11th biggest opening weekend in history with $ 187 million. After 10 days in the white tent, the independent superhero adventure has earned $ 291 million in North America.

In international ticket sales, “Strange” added $ 83.5 million from 49 markets. The film has grossed $ 688.1 million worldwide.

When Disney releases a Marvel movie in theaters, rival movie studios tend to avoid opening new movies – or risk falling in love as a result. Over the weekend, two national films opened with disappointing results. Universal’s disruptive remake of Stephen King’s “Firestarter” cost $ 3.8 million on 2,412 screens while it landed on Peacock at the same time; and the Roadside Attractions-based “Family Camp” grossed $ 1.4 million from 854 locations. Neither of these films was particularly expensive to produce, which means that it may not be a nightmare to make those films profitable, but it is certainly not a currency that cinemas hope to produce when a new film is released in cinemas across the country.

“Firestarter” was hit by negative reviews and poor word of mouth. The film, which is about a girl with an unusual fever, received 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and “C-” CinemaScore from cinema guests. These weak numbers suggest that the few who saw the film over the weekend will not be in a hurry to tell their friends to watch it in cinemas. The most shocking part of “Firestarter” is that “High School Musical” heartthrob Zac Efron is officially old enough to play Dad on the big screen. And yet it was not enough to entice the audience.

How bad was the opening of ticket sales this weekend for “Firestarter”? To put them in context, the original 1984 film, starring Drew Barrymore, started better, not adjusted for inflation, which earned $ 4.7 million from 1,356 cinemas. The latest “Firestarter” could get an increase in Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal, but the company did not provide streaming measurements.

David A. Gross, who runs the film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, believes that ticket sales have been flattened out because the film is already available at home.

“‘Firestarter’ has a large production line; Blumhouse and Stephen King are constant click producers, “says Gross. But, he adds, “having the film available on stream at the same time as it is in theaters strengthens that this is not a big screen that must be seen as entertainment.
