In his first official tournament in two months, Tiger Woods could not recover from bad luck on the opening hole and finished 6th over par 78 on Thursday in the first round of the St. Petersburg Open. Andrews in St. Scotland.
Woods had a double bogey on the first and seventh holes, a quick drop to 6 over before three birdies and three bogeys took the rest of him. He finished the day tied for 146th place out of 156 golfers on the course.
That equaled Woods’ worst score in the opening round of 22 starts at the Open, which equated to the 78 he scored in 2019.
Woods’ first tee shot found a penalty shot on the track and when he met his approach he had to turn his head away to prevent the soil from blowing in his eyes. The shot bounced short and into Swilcan Burn, a stream that defended in front of the green.
He had to make a fall and when he got to the surface he lost his putt for a bogey.
Woods was later asked if he felt good and bad luck balanced out over time.
“In the process or in the ring? said Woods, laughing. “Yes. Yes, in the process, yes. But in a circle sometimes it just goes that way. It just goes one way and it never seems to come back, no matter how hard you fight. And then I added problems, like I said, with my bad speed on the flats. “
Woods’ first birdie came on par-4 9th, where he ran his tee shot across the green and flipped to set up an 8-foot birdie putt. He hit two in a row by landing his shot on par-4 10. 4 feet from the pin.
But he three-putted for a bogey on par-3 11. and got only one more bird the rest of the way, par-5 14. He ended up with five bogeys along with two doubles.
“I feel like I didn ‘t really hit it hard,” Woods said of his cut. “Yes, I had a bad speed on the greens, yes. But I didn’t really feel like I hit that bad, but I ended up in bad places. Or something strange just happened. And just how it goes. Links (golf) is like this. “
Woods last played at the PGA Championship in May, retiring after the third lap due to persistent pain in his right leg and a leg he had undergone surgery. As Woods did not want to miss the 150th game of The Open at the birthplace of golf, where he won in 2000 and 2005, Woods dropped out of the US Open last month to continue his recovery.
He has only played in the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open since recovering from an injury in a car accident in February 2021. Woods also competed in a two-day pro-am tournament in Ireland last week to line up for Open golf. .
After the second round on Friday, the top 70 players and a draw will get through the cut.
“It looks like I have to shoot 66 tomorrow to have a chance,” said Woods.
“It simply came to our notice then. Kids did it today. And it is my responsibility tomorrow to continue and do that. “
Woods is playing his first two rounds with US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick of England and Max Homa. The group will depart at 9:58 local time (4:58 ET) on Friday.
