- Major General Gebremedhin Fekadu died the morning his wife and children visited him in detention.
- He was a decorated soldier commanding AU peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Somalia.
- The Tigrayan Transitional Government promised to avenge the loss of all its heroic martyrs.
Major General Gebremedhin Fekadu – who went by the alias Wedi Necho – died last week in detention in Addis Ababa.
He is described as a “martyr” who paid “the ultimate price” from the hands of the Ethiopian government.
Fekadu was the head of communications in the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) for his imprisonment as part of the extensive detention of almost all Tigrayan members of the ENDF.
In an emotional statement, the Tigrayan Transitional Government said the decorated soldier, who also served as commander of the African Union (AU) peacekeeping mission in Liberia and Somalia, had written an indelible history.
They accused the Ethiopian government of forcing Fekadu, “who committed no sin other than to honor his people and country, to disappear in prison solely because of his Tigrayan identity, and ultimately killed him”.
Fekadu was arrested on November 11, along with 17 other military generals and senior officers, for cutting communications to the Northern Command and allowing Tigrayan troops to attack it.
Along with four brigadier generals, five colonels and five lieutenants, he was charged with treason.
Reports in East Africa say Fekadu was visited by his wife and children at the Federal Prisons Commission, Kaliti High Detention Center, the morning he died.
Tigray’s transitional government is now demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Fekadu’s death.
“The Tigray Government demands that an independent inquiry be conducted by an impartial international entity into the circumstances surrounding the martyrdom of the heroic freedom fighter,” the government said.
“We will work to address the manifold problems facing our people, such as avenging the loss of all our heroic martyrs, including the sacrifice of our heroic fighter, Major General Gebremedhin Fekadu.”
