Major U.S. airlines, business and travel groups and other companies urged the White House on Thursday to cancel COVID-19 exit test requirements for vaccinated international passengers traveling to the United States.
“In view of the slow economic recovery of the business and international travel sectors, and in the light of advances in medicine and improved public health surveys in the United States, we urge you to immediately remove the requirement for in-flight testing for vaccinated pilots,” the letter said. by American Airlines, Carnival Corp, Marriott International, Walt Disney Co.’s Disney Parks, US Chamber of Commerce, US Travel Association and more.
Airline executives say many Americans are not traveling abroad due to concerns that they will test positive and become stranded abroad.
In a letter to Ashish Jha, White House Coronavirus Response Manager, he said “the economic cost of maintaining the measure is significant,” and said that overseas spending has fallen by 78% compared to 2019 levels.
The letter stated that many foreign governments “with similar infections, vaccinations and hospital stays”, including the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada “, have eliminated the requirements for exit testing for vaccinated tourists.
The letter stated that the Biden government does not require a negative test for arrivals at border ports with Canada and Mexico, but only for air passengers.
The White House did not immediately comment.
On April 18, a federal judge declared the 14-month-old transport mask mandate illegal and the Biden government quickly stopped enforcing rules on airplanes and transport hubs such as airports.
In December, the Biden government tightened new rules requiring international passengers arriving in the United States to receive a negative COVID-19 test within one day of travel.
Under previous rules, vaccinated international air passengers could present a negative result obtained within three days of departure.
