From American travel to modern dance and pop, German chef Wim Wenders’ film is nothing if not dramatic, and his latest inspiration is the Tokyo public toilet.
The great European cinema film about the urban redevelopment project of architects turning 17 dingy los in the countryside into a work of art.
They include a toilet with a nice outlet that makes it look unobtrusive when the door is locked, and the other with a wooden handle from the stadium manufacturer Olympic Kengo Kuma.
All the new attractive buildings in the Shibuya area of the capital are free, wheelchairs can be accessed and well maintained by a team of technicians.
“There’s a lot of Japanese stuff about this idea, about all the foundations. I almost think it’s a utopian idea,” he said.
Wenders said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Everyone needs a toilet!
Because the toilet is a place where everyone is the same. There is no rich and poor, no old and young, everyone is a part of man. “
Wenders, 76, has used cinematographers to form secret societies including “Wings of Desire”, “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Paris, Texas”.
The director said that the organizers of the renovation project, called “Toilet Toilet”, approached him, who prompted him to make a film featuring four short stories with actor Koji Yakusho as a cleaner.
“I love architecture. In the next life, I would like to be a architect,” Wenders said.
He said he was thrilled to be working with celebrity Tadao Ando, 80, whose glossy toilet with small slats leaves the air as people wash their hands. .
“I was happy when I saw his toilet the next day, and saw how it worked in the light. You thought, ‘This is a precious place.”
It was not Wenders’ first time in Japan: his 1985 film “Tokyo-Ga” was a tribute to the country of filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, but he made headlines in the late 1980s about fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto.
So far, 12 of Tokyo’s 17 new toilets have been completed and operational, mainly in parks and along the harbor.
Ando told reporters that in many countries, “public toilets are not considered attractive.”
“So, I think these beautiful toilets can make people from all over the world look beautiful in Japan.”
