Johannesburg – The Tripartite Alliance will celebrate the life of assassinated SACP Secretary General Chris Hani on Saturday.
It has been 28 years since Hani was gunned down outside his home in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni, in 1993.
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, SACP Secretary General Blade Nzimande and Cosatu Second Vice President Louise Thipe will lead the alliance delegation and deliver their messages.
Hani’s wife Limpho Hani will deliver the family’s message in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park in Ekurhuleni.
The alliance secretariat, representing the ANC, SACP, Cosatu and the Chris Hani family, held a virtual meeting on Wednesday to review preparations for the commemoration.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, which posthumously granted Hani the freedom of the city in November 2006 and approved April as Chris Hani month, will host the event.
At the time of his assassination on April 10, 1993, Hani was secretary general of the SACP and a member of the ANC’s national executive committee.
He joined the struggle for liberation and socialism from an early age as a student and young activist, and devoted his entire life to the struggle for democracy and social emancipation.
Hani had been chief of staff of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), succeeding Joe Slovo.
In a statement, the SACP said Hani’s assassination was aimed at igniting a civil war as a means of perpetuating the racist, oppressive and ruthlessly exploitative capitalist apartheid regime.
“To date, there has been no full disclosure of the truth, as the facts clearly indicate that convicted killers Clive Derby-Lewis and Janusz Waluś were not the only ones involved in the chain of assassinations. since its conception.
“For example, the weapon used to assassinate Hani in cold blood was taken from the military arsenal. Part of the undisclosed truth is who took it and who else was involved in the transmission of the murder weapon from point to point until it was used by convicted assassins. Justice has not yet run its course, ”said the SACP.
The party said that due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the need to protect lives by adhering to preventive regulations, attendance is limited to family members and delegated representatives from Ekurhuleni town, Gauteng Provincial Government, National Government, Alliance and Guests. .
