Tunisian judge freezes bank accounts of former parliament speaker, former prime minister – SABC News

A Tunisian judge has ordered the freezing of the financial assets of former Speaker of the Dissolution of Parliament, Rached Ghannouchi, former Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali and several others, an official told Reuters on Tuesday.

He added that the list included Moadh Ghannouchi, Ghannouchi’s son, and his son-in-law, Rafik Abdessalem, a former foreign minister.

“It is an order from the terrorist judge to freeze the bank accounts of these people, the Financial Analysis Committee asked the banks to enforce the ruling,” said an official in the Financial Analysis Committee, which is chaired by the Governor. .

No further details were available and Rached, Moadh Ghannouchi and Jebali were not immediately available for comment.

In May, a Tunisian judge issued a travel ban on several individuals, including Ghannouchi, the Islamist leader of the Ennahda party and former president of the dissolved parliament.

Ghannouchi, 81, is a fierce critic of President Kais Saied, who seized power last year, ousted the government, dissolved parliament and began governing by directives, which critics describe as a coup.

Saieds’ efforts have fueled fears of a return to Tunisian dictatorship, where the first so-called Arab Spring uprisings began in 2011 and heralded a series of democratic reforms.
