Tunisians protest against constitutional referendum as opposition grows – SABC News

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tunis on Saturday against a vote on a new law called by President Kais Saied that would strengthen his authority.

The protest by Abir Moussi, leader of the Free Constitutional Party, reflected the growing opposition to Saied since he took power last year, dissolving parliament and ruling by decree in a move called by the opposition. coup d’état.

Thousands of people marched from Bab Souika Square in the capital to the Kasbah, waving Tunisian flags.

Abir Moussi told the crowd, “Tunisians are starving, public finances are collapsing, but Saied doesn’t care .. He is only focused on his own work to introduce his law.

Saied wants to amend the law to give the president more powers, against the backdrop of a tanking economy and fears of a public financial crisis. He intends to put the new constitution to the polls on July 25.

Another protest called by other opposition groups, including the Islamist group Ennahda, Sunday is expected to hold protests against the election and Saied’s latest policies, such as the dismissal of many judges and military trials for some politicians.

The president’s supporters say he is supporting a popular military whose brutality and corruption condemned Tunisia to decades of political paralysis and economic collapse.

However, Tunisia’s political leaders have said they will cancel the election, and the hard-line UGTT union, which called for public action on Thursday, refused to participate in negotiations on a new constitution.

Sadok Belaid, head of Tunisia’s Constitutional Committee, said on Saturday that he would submit the new law to the president on Monday.

Saied has appointed a new election commission, raising doubts about the validity of any vote.
