“It’s very special to play alongside him on Eben’s 100th Trial,” said De Jager, who will pack in the middle row alongside Etzebeth for the 31st time, making them the second-highest bok-lock partnership after Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha (63 Tests together in engine room).

“It’s a special occasion for him, but it will be even more special if we can help win the match for him and Bongi.

“For us this is a final, the series is at stake and Wales feel the same way. We have big games ahead of us this year and for years to come, so it will be good for us to get used to pressure games like this.”

De Allende spoke equally highly of Etzebeth and Mbonambi while echoing De Jager’s take on the importance of winning the series to build momentum.

Damian De Allende has been with Eben Etzebeth since the U19 level

“I’ve been fortunate to have played with Eben since U19 and the way he rolled over the other players back then showed the aura he has as a player.” said de Allende.

“We all know this is his 100th Test but the team’s goals come first and hopefully we can get a good result so he can celebrate this milestone in style.

“It’s a tremendous achievement for him and Bongi, but for us as a team there’s a bigger picture and that is winning.”

Expecting a massive onslaught from Wales, who will be desperate to secure their first consecutive win on South African soil, De Jager said set pieces would be crucial in determining which team emerged victorious.

“In big games like this it’s always important to dominate physically, that’s crucial for the result and we don’t expect anything different on Saturday.” said De Jäger.

“Wales has good strikers and they’re big on their set pieces so the struggles in the scrums, lineouts and mauls are going to be big.”
