Two men aged 23 and 31 were there arrested for murder in Taung in the northwest after 40-year-old Thabiso Mothibedi was allegedly beaten to death.

Police say they were called to the Manthe clinic on Friday night after a group of men arrived with Mothibedi and asked nurses to check if he was alive.

The victim was allegedly attacked after being accused of stealing money.

According to police, the deceased was said to be in Lenganeng village when the suspects took him to Manthe village, where he was allegedly chained to a generator and assaulted.

The victim was reportedly taken to Manthe Clinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The suspects are expected to appear before Taung Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a convicted rapist and murderer has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court in Polokwane, Limpopo. 32-year-old Gerald Makua raped and killed two elderly women in the villages of Legolaneng and Mogaung outside Groblersdal in 2019.

He was positively linked to the crimes through DNA testing.

Police spokesman Mamphaswa Seabi welcomed the ruling and said it will deter potential criminals.

“This is a reminder to all that violence against vulnerable elderly citizens will not be tolerated in the province and barbarians like Gerald Khomotso Makua will be permanently ostracized from society at all costs.”
