The Ukrainian military said early Tuesday morning that its intentions to protect the Azovstal steel plant of the “heroes of our time” at the southern port of Mariupol had run out and promised to rescue workers still trapped inside.
“Mariupol” has completed its military service, “the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in a statement. The top military command ordered the officers of the department stationed in Azovstal to save the lives of the workers Mari The defenders of Mariupol were the heroes of our time.
The 53 injured workers were evacuated to a hospital in Novoazovsk, east of Mariupol, on Monday and another 211 were evacuated, said Ukraine’s deputy security official.
Five trucks carrying a military personnel arrived late Monday in Novoazovsk, and some of those evacuated to a hospital, a Reuters witness said.
Novoazovsk is currently under the control of pro-Russian separatists who have occupied eastern Ukraine since 2014.
Since Russia launched its offensive in February, the destruction of Mariupol has become a symbol and Ukraine’s ability to withstand Russian and Russian aggression is poised to destroy Ukrainian-held territory.
The last defenders of the Azovstal have been holding for weeks in bunkers and tunnels built into the ground to resist nuclear war.
Civilians were fired from the company, one of the largest steel companies in Europe, earlier this month.
“Efforts to rescue the remaining defendants in the Azovstal region are ongoing,” the military said. There has been no immediate response from Moscow authorities to the development in the Azovstal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a video address tonight, called Monday a “difficult day”.
“Ukraine needs living Ukrainian heroes. This is our standard. I think every reasonable person should understand these words,” Zelenskyy said.
“This work is still bringing men home, and this work is important. In time. “
