- A small village outside Kharkiv has been recaptured by Ukrainian forces.

Ukrainian forces recaptured a small village on the outskirts of Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, on Monday as Kyiv’s forces launch a counterattack against a halting Russian invasion.
Members of the Ukrainian army were clearing and securing destroyed homes in the Malaya Rohan settlement, about five kilometers from Kharkiv, after pushing Russian forces out.
AFP journalists saw what appeared to be the bodies of two Russian soldiers in the streets of the village, which were largely destroyed by the fighting.
The remains of two other soldiers had been thrown into a nearby well.
“There are Russian corpses all over the place,” a Ukrainian soldier told AFP, who said more than two dozen soldiers sent to Ukraine by Moscow had been killed in the battle for the village.
AFP journalists also observed the remains of several Russian armored vehicles left in the courtyards of the houses in the village.
Ukraine launched its attack on the Russian-controlled village in the middle of last week, but it took several days to kill Moscow troops hiding in basements and nearby forests, the military said.
“Our troops are liberating Malaya Rohan, and that is hugely important because Russian troops are constantly shelling residential areas in Kharkiv from there,” said the mayor of Ukraine’s second most populous city, Igor Terekhov.
Russian and Ukrainian troops, meanwhile, have been fighting for days for control of the neighboring town of Vilkhivka, a few kilometers further north.
Ukrainian officials have also accused the Russian army of using it as a base to fire on Kharkiv.
In Malaya Rohan, the situation was relatively calm on Monday with the deep sounds of shelling in the distance.
An adviser to the head of the president’s office, Oleksiy Arestovich, said Ukrainian forces were on the counterattack against invading Russian troops in the northeast, citing small, tactical offensives.
Moscow’s month-long invasion of its pro-democracy neighbor has largely stalled without major progress recently, and Ukrainian forces have even been able to attack in some places.
