UN chief travels to West Africa after visiting Eastern Europe – SABC News

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is on his way to West Africa after a week-long experiment in Eastern Europe.

The Secretary – General’s Office has announced that it will launch a Ramadan solidarity visit with visits to Nigeria, Niger and Senegal, where it will also focus on the impact of the Ukraine war on mainland Africa.

Faran Haq’s spokesman says the secretary general will meet and share Iftar dinner with Senegalese President Macky Sall, who also took over the presidency of the African Union earlier this year.

Haq says the UN chief will also take part in the Eid celebrations with Nigerian President Mohamed Bazoum and that he will meet with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the three countries, the Secretary-General will meet with senior officials and representatives of civil society, including women, youth groups and religious leaders.

He will meet with families affected by violence and instability in the Sahel, including refugees and refugees.

Guterres will also see first-hand the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities and will assess the progress and challenges of COVID-19 recovery.

The Secretary-General launched annual Ramadan solidarity visits when he was the top refugee chief, but the tradition was broken by a pandemic.

This year, he will also use the visit to declare his solidarity with the victims of terrorism in the area.
