According to the United Nations in South Africa, yes ready to support the government’s response following the devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

“We are ready to extend our support to the government’s response and the affected communities, many of whom experienced similar devastation in 2019. Families living on the banks of rivers in informal settlements find already vulnerable to wash their homes, walls and roofs. the collapse and loss of family members. The UN also notes with concern the impact of the floods in the Eastern Cape and urges communities to cross the rivers carefully. ”
Abdool also says these recurring floods are a stark reminder that a fair transition in the country must not only focus on decarbonisation, but also on adaptation, as climate change is real.
“Our urban planners must take action in the face of this devastating challenge, ensuring that houses are not built on waterways and that urban planning laws are enforced without fear and favor.”
Meanwhile, Unicef and other organizations have come in to help those affected.
Unicef staff member Muriel Mafico says: “Unicef South Africa is working with the provincial and national government over the recent floods in KwaZulu Natal. We stand together again. The floods are devastating, and Unicef is working with the Department of Primary Education to address the impact of the floods in more than 600 closed schools. We are also working with the Ministry of Social Development to conduct a comprehensive assessment to understand the impact of floods and local needs. ”
Authorities say the death toll is over 440 and they expect the death toll to rise as new bodies are discovered in one of the worst floods in South Africa’s history.
