US sends two surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine – Pentagon – SABC News

The United States is sending Ukraine two NASAMS surface-to-air missile systems, four additional counter-artillery radars and up to 150,000 rounds of 155mm artillery shells as part of its latest weapons packages for Ukraine, the Pentagon said on Friday.

The aid package, worth around $820 million, was broadly announced by US President Joe Biden in Madrid on Thursday after a gathering of NATO leaders focused on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Pentagon gave more details Friday as it formalized the announcement, saying the latest round of security support also included additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

The new US aid aims to strengthen Kyiv as it faces heavy hits from Russian artillery.

Russia’s intensified campaign of long-range missile attacks on Ukrainian cities came as its forces succeeded on the battlefield to the east in a relentless assault to try to force Kyiv to cede two provinces to separatists.

Including recent rounds of aid, the United States has now pledged about $6.9 billion since Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24, bringing full-scale war back to Europe.
