The US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Investigation Unit, also known as FinCEN, said last week it had identified approximately $ 5.2 billion in outgoing Bitcoin transactions potentially linked to ransomware payments. According to a report: FinCEN officials said the figure was compiled by analyzing 2,184 Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) filed by U.S. financial institutions over the past decade, between January 1, 2011 and June 30, 2021. While early SAR reports uncovered $ 1.56 billion in suspicious activity, subsequent FinCEN investigation into the 10 most common ransomware variants revealed additional transactions, amounting to approximately $ 5.2 billion just for these groups.
