Veteran broadcaster Dirara Mokoena buried in Johannesburg on Saturday. The former manager of Lesedi FM and executive producer of Leihlo La Secaba, 64, died of cancer two weeks ago.
He started his career as a junior announcer at Lesedi FM in 1983 and worked for the public broadcaster until his retirement in 2019.
During a moving funeral service, family, friends and colleagues praised the veteran journalist’s contribution to the growth of the industry. Here’s what some of them had to say:
Her son, Kwena Mokoena, says: “He was a disciplined person. He always wanted the best for us. It’s very difficult to try to imagine the world without him and he will be sorely missed.
On behalf of Mokoena’s widow, Poppy Sebatana declares: “You are my protector, my soul. My mind is broken. I feel pain, but you went to rest. Go ahead, my love!
Mokoena retired in 2019 after 35 years of public service broadcasting. For his former colleagues, he was a man who never tired of cultivating talents.

A colleague of Lesedi FM, Thuso Motaung said: “He was a peaceful person when he arrived at the radio station in 2015. He found and solved the problems he faced by singing.
Sesotho Bulletin Editor-in-Chief Borentsi Mooko says: “While in Bloemfontein he became the watchdog for our Sesotho TV newsletter. He always called when he noticed a mistake to have it corrected.
Mokoena was also praised for fighting for indigenous languages to be recognized on the air.
Producer Leihlo la Sechaba Annie Mokoena said: “It would emphasize using plain language that even older people can understand wherever they listen or watch.”

Former colleague Mohlalefi ‘wire’ Khoali said: “Lesedi FM now has 4 million listeners thanks to its contribution. When he left radio in 2019, he had laid a solid foundation.
Manini Nyokong, Lesedi FM’s Program Manager, says: “He was very passionate about ensuring that Sesotho culture is preserved so that young people know where they are coming from and where they are going.
Mokoena was buried in Fourways cemetery. He is survived by his wife, a son, two daughters and a grandson.
