A patient with the same virus that causes facial paralysis and has affected Justin Bieber said on Saturday that she was sad to see what the Canadian pop star is going through and proud that he is raising awareness about the disease.
“I’ve watched his video and I’m not going to lie, I shed a few tears. “I never thought I would connect with someone so much that I did not know it,” Nicoya Rescorla told Reuters in a video interview with Marazion, in the south-west of England.
Former teenager Bieber, 28, announced on Friday that he had been diagnosed with a virus which paralyzed half of his face and forced him to cancel some upcoming shows. He said in a video posted on Instagram that he had Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which affected the nerves in his ear and face, and his right eye did not blink.
Rescorla said she contracted the syndrome 20 months ago, around the time her 11-week-old baby was hospitalized with a serious infection and her grandfather, who was caring for her, had to be taken to a nursing home.
“I think for me personally, stress was a big factor, a big factor,” said Rescorla, who is also 28 years old and has three children.
“It’s hard to think of someone else going through something you’re going through. Obviously, Justin Bieber. he is a great celebrity and I was also so proud that he was spreading awareness about Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.
“It was heartwarming that he was spreading consciousness, but also heartfelt that he was going through it.
Speaking about the impact of the illness on her life, Rescorla said she could no longer drive or leave the house herself. She said she needed to drink from straw and had problems with dizziness.
“I went from being so independent, very independent, to letting my husband take care of me because I have not been able to do it for myself,” she said.
