Vingegaard retains yellow jersey as Philipsen wins first LeTour stage – SABC News

Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen celebrated his first Tour de France victory when he won a bunch sprint on stage 15 as overall leader Jonas Vingegaard suffered a bad day on Sunday.

Alpecin Deceuninck rider Philipsen stopped his effort perfectly to beat his compatriot Wout van Aert and Denmark’s Mads Pedersen who finished second and third respectively.

Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey but hit the deck and lost two of his Jumbo Visma teammates when Steven Kruijswijk fell and Primoz Roglic did not start the 202.5km ride from Rodez after failing to recover from injuries.

With temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, organizers sprayed parts of the road with water to cool the melting tar before the riders drove by.

With just over 50km to go, Vingegaard crashed along with his teammate Tiesj Benoot. Vingegaard made it back into the peloton and still leads by two minutes and 22 seconds over defending champion Tadej Pogacar.

Two Frenchmen, Alexis Gougeard and Benjamin Thomas, attacked with 48 kilometers to go. Thomas, a tracking specialist, went alone in the final but was caught 500 meters from the finish line, leaving the French riders still waiting for their first stage win of this edition.
Monday is the rest day of the Tour de France, the 16th stage continues on Tuesday.
