[WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT] Killers kill at least 50 people in northeastern Borno state – SABC News

At least 50 people were killed by gunmen on Sunday around the town of Rann in Nigeria’s Borno state, on the northeastern tip of the country near the border with Cameroon, a witness told Reuters by telephone on Monday.

Since 2009, Nigeria’s northeastern and Borno states in particular have been a rebel center led by Boko Haram militant groups.

Millions have been displaced and about 350,000 people have died as a result of attacks and humanitarian crises as a result, according to the United Nations.

Over time, Boko Haram has split with an active offshoot called the Islamic State in West Africa and also claimed responsibility for attacks in the West African country.

Locals blame the latest attack on Boko Haram.

Army spokesman General Onyema Nwachukwu did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We are all in pain over the murder of our innocent people who were working in their farmland. … We buried 50 people in Rann today. “They were clearing their arable land before the rainy season while others were fetching firewood,” said Harun Tom, a local farmer.

Agid Muhammad, a farmer who recently returned to Rann after living in a refugee camp, described a bloodbath.

“Large quantities of Boko Haram on motorcycles armed with guns and machines surrounded our people who were working on their farms and held them hostage before killing them one by one,” Muhammad said, adding that his uncle was still missing.

“They were tied with ropes and slaughtered. When I’m talking to you, not many people are taken into account.
